Your Lifeguard Walks On Water

I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.” (John 15:5, ESV)

Mini Devotional

A mini message to take with you this week to help you in your devotion to God.

YOUR LIFEGUARD WALKS ON WATER
Devotional by: Elijah Bell

In a brave act of faith, Peter asked to come to Jesus, even though to do so would require him to walk across raging waters. But he saw Jesus walking on the water, and knew that if Jesus wanted Peter to also walk on the water, it would happen. He had the faith to take that first step…

“But when he saw that the wind was boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink he cried out, saying, ‘Lord, save me!’” (Matthew 14:30).

As Peter walked out in faith toward Jesus, he started off fine. He certainly was bold in his faith, for none of the other apostles had asked to come to Jesus on the water. But his faith was shallow. When he faced turbulent times, he forgot why he was walking on the water in the first place. It wasn’t to avoid trouble. It wasn’t to keep his feet from getting wet. It wasn’t to enjoy a scenic stroll across the lake. It was to COME TO JESUS!

When we walk on the water of life, and begin to face turbulent times, don’t we sometimes forget a couple of things?

First, we forget WHY we’re walking on the water in the first place. Just like Peter, he became so distracted by the wind and the waves that he let his attention be diverted from the point of his stroll. When faced with turbulent times in life, we can often forget the entire point of our lives on earth, and why we’re doing what we’re doing. We become so focused on keeping our feet dry that we forget why we stepped out onto the water in the first place.

Second, we often forget that our lifeguard walks on water! Peter, when faced with turbulent waves, took his eyes off Jesus, and focused on the problems of life. During our storms of life, it is the tendency to look at the raging waters and be afraid. But we see what happens when we take our eyes off of the One who can walk on top of the waves—we sink into the problems of life. When you face the waves and wind of life, do you keep your eyes on Jesus, and have faith that He can and will walk above the raging waters?

This week, as you are faced with the turbulent waves of life, remind yourself of two things: first, remind yourself of WHY you’re walking on the water in the first place: to come to Jesus! And second, remind yourself that your lifeguard walks on water.

Bible Class Review

A summary of what we’ve been learning about in our adult Bible classes.

Sunday Morning Class (10am):

Current Class: Making Disciples the Jesus Way. We are currently talking about principles for ministering to people who have yet responded to Jesus’ challenge to “come and see.” These are people who may very well come to Jesus, but they need a prepared Jesus follower to enter into their life relationally. We are discussing how we can be those prepared Jesus followers.

Wednesday Evening Class (6:30pm):

Current Class: I and We: Practical Steps In Living Out Our Vision And Mission. In the class last night, we continued from last week talking about how Jesus never disregarded people on the margins of society, and how we must embrace people on the margins. The church is made up of, and for, the people who are marginalized by the world. This is another example of things we’re being encouraged to do in this class that help us live our vision and mission together as a church family.
