Out Of The Heart

I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.” (John 15:5, ESV)

Mini Devotional

A mini message to take with you this week to help you in your devotion to God.

Out Of The Heart

Devotional By: Matthew Woodyard

As a child I used to imagine how great life would be as a grown-up. Like most young men, my ponderance of adulthood boiled down to how many Corvettes I would own (ZERO) and how many titles I’d win playing basketball for the University of Kentucky (ZERO). One aspect of adulthood I never gave an ounce of thought to was SELF-CONTROL. As I near my 40th trip around the sun, I can assuredly state that self-control, or lack thereof, has played a significantly larger role in my day-to-day adult life, eclipsing both basketball and corvettes, sadly.

“Life ain’t fair and the world is mean.” -Sturgill Simpson

I struggle daily with self-control, and I’d venture to say it’s not a problem unique to me. Life’s circumstances may be out of your control, but your response is not. During stressful times, self-control is hard. We often preach about how it preserves relationships, how it’s necessary, and how it’s expected of us. That is all true. But let’s take a moment to recognize that controlling ourselves can be very difficult when you’re heartbroken, anxious, righteously angry, or feeling lost. That is part of being human. Thankfully, Jesus was also human once. He knows the struggle.

“…for God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.” 2 Timothy 1:7

In the gospels, we not only learn what Jesus taught, but we also learn about His character. Jesus showed love. Jesus showed a propensity for peace. Jesus also got upset sometimes. Remember the money changers in the temple? Jesus, who was a carpenter and was likely a strong man, drove them out with a whip and turned over their tables for emphasis (John 2:13-16). Anger, hurt, and other “negative” emotions are not in themselves sinful. How we handle them, however, can be. How do we safeguard against that?

In Luke 6:43-45 Jesus said, “For no good tree bears bad fruit, nor again does a bad tree bear good fruit, for each tree is known by its own fruit. For figs are not gathered from thorn bushes, nor are grapes picked from a bramble bush. The good person out of the good treasure of his heart produces good, and the evil person out of his evil treasure produces evil, for out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.”

How’s your heart? If your heart is in the right place, what comes out of your mouth will be good. If you’ve not protected your heart from the world, hard times may bring out the worst in you. Personally, I’m going to focus on my heart so my mouth, and my actions, will follow.

“Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one receives the prize? So run that you may obtain it.” 1 Corinthians 9:24

  • Card Ministry

Every Sunday there are cards spread out on a table in the lobby that will be sent out to various church members and guests who need encouragement. You can help serve and encourage by making sure to sign these cards each week. If you know of someone the church should send a card, please give the name(s) and address to Joyce Best. We have “get-well” cards, “thinking of you” cards, “praying for you” cards, and sympathy cards. You can also text the information to (502) 593-5865.
