Riding with the King

I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.” (John 15:5, ESV)

Mini Devotional

A mini message to take with you this week to help you in your devotion to God.

Riding with the King
Devotional by: Ray Bowman

“Rejoice greatly, Daughter Zion! Shout, Daughter Jerusalem!

See, your king comes to you, righteous and victorious,

lowly and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.”

Zechariah 9:9

When we think of ceremonies and festivities accompanying the formal entry into a city by medieval kings, we generally picture a man of noble bearing riding a magnificent, prancing, white steed, often following a great success in battle. It is the picture of pomp and circumstance expected by a monarch being greeted and paid appropriate homage by his subjects and civic authorities. It might sound a trifle pretentious in current times, but is it all that different to see a celebrity or high government official arriving somewhere in a limousine with his or her entourage in tow?

The general tableau is one designed to reflect significance and importance, attracting attention of the onlookers. It is most often viewed as an acceptable display of opulence - and, perhaps, arrogance - due a person or persons of perceived high station.

Now, compare that with the arrival of Jesus in Jerusalem to celebrate the Passover;

“...the large crowd that had come to the feast heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem. So they took branches of palm trees and went out to meet him, crying out, “Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord, even the King of Israel!” And Jesus found a young donkey and sat on it, just as it is written, “Fear not, daughter of Zion; behold, your king is coming, sitting on a donkey’s colt!””

John 12:12-15

Biblical donkeys were valued as sturdy, steady beasts of burden, often favored for riding for that reason. Historically, entering a city on a donkey also signified entry in peace, rather than a conquering king arriving on a horse. The young donkey mentioned here is also perceived as a symbol of humility, diametrically opposed to the fiery white charger previously referenced.

Knowing full well that circumstances would soon change and He would be facing ridicule, physical abuse and, ultimately, death on a cruel cross, Jesus arrived with the calm, confident appearance of a conquering sovereign demonstrating humility and love.

We need to take note of his demeanor and fully embrace it if we are to be riding with the King.

God Bless
