Gone Fishing
“I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.” (John 15:5, ESV)
GONE FISHING
Devotional by: Elijah Bell
In Luke 5, Simon was fishing all night, and seemingly quite exhausted and frustrated at their lack of a catch. And then here comes Jesus, the carpenter’s son, lecturing HIM, a professional fisherman, on how to catch fish. Who does He think He is?
Luke 5:4 And when he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch.”
Simon must have been frustrated, and it comes out in his reply.
Luke 5:5 And Simon answered, “Master, we toiled all night and took nothing! But at your word I will let down the nets.”
But even though Simon had tried everything HE knew to do and was unsuccessful, when he did things the way Jesus commanded, something different happened…
Luke 5:6-11 — And when they had done this, they enclosed a large number of fish, and their nets were breaking. 7 They signaled to their partners in the other boat to come and help them. And they came and filled both the boats, so that they began to sink. 8 But when Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus’ knees, saying, “Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord.” 9 For he and all who were with him were astonished at the catch of fish that they had taken, 10 and so also were James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. And Jesus said to Simon, “Do not be afraid; from now on you will be catching men.” 11 And when they had brought their boats to land, they left everything and followed him.
Quite often, when we try to do things OUR way, we fail. And even when we learn Jesus’ way, we may be skeptical, just like Simon was. But we could be astonished, too, at what Jesus could do in our lives and ministries if only we put down the net as Jesus commanded.
So today, let Jesus into your boat. Decide to use your life today for Jesus’ work, and not your own. Do things Jesus’ way to experience the full effect of God’s power in the world. And don’t forget to fall down and worship Jesus just like the men in the boat did. And after that, they left everything and followed him. Today, make the conscious effort to leave everything behind that is not part of Jesus’ mission, and choose to follow Him, and Him alone.
Let’s go fishing!

Make Sure To Pre-Register For VBS
All children MUST be checked into our system to attend VBS. That means that you can save a lot of time at arrival by registering your children early so that they are already in the system when you get here. If you don’t pre-register, it will slow things down a lot, so please do so before the event. Thank you!
Please Return Your Baby Bottles
As you fill the bottles with donations for Avenues For Women, please return them before Father’s day to the lobby.

Teachers Needed (Message From Matthew Woodyard, Deacon of Education):
It's been awesome to see more and more people return to in-person worship each and every week. Covid 19 robbed us of so much and I couldn't be happier to be on the other side of the tunnel. As more people have returned to in-person worship, so have their children. We've not had a full roster of teachers since the pandemic began. For a long time, this wasn't a big deal because we didn't have a lot of students. Thankfully we are seeing more and more students each week, but we still don't have enough teachers to be fully staffed. We desperately need volunteers to teach our Sunday and Wednesday Bible Classes. Our students need to be in the appropriate classes, where they receive age-appropriate instruction. We owe it to our kids to make sure they have everything they need and right now they need volunteers to teach their classes. The following classes need teachers for this current quarter: K-1st grade (Sunday & Wednesday), 2nd-3rd grade (Wednesday), and 4th-5th grade (Wednesday). If you'd be willing to help out, please get in touch with me. We've got a great group of kids and they deserve the best!
VBS Promotion
We need your help to promote VBS. Here are some ways you can do that:
1. Take a yard sign from the lobby and put it in your yard.
2. Distribute flyers. They are also in the lobby.
3. Share the Facebook Posts related to VBS.
Avenues For Women Donations
Each Mother's Day we pass out Baby Bottles to use to collect money to benefit Avenues for Women. It is a community organization dedicated to working with women to choose life and providing a variety of services. They even work with men and post-abortion women. It has a Christ based focus. We started with 72 Baby Bottles. If you have not taken one yet, please get one out of the crates as you come in the main entrance. Let's each take one or two and have such a strong demand that we need even more bottles. The bottles are returned when they are filled. Just place in one of the crates. We try to have them in by Father's Day. Let's see if we can raise $2,000 for this great organization. Remember as Paul, inspired by the Holy Spirit, writes in I Corinthians 6:19: “Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.” Thanks for your support.

Sunday Morning Class (10am):
Current Class: Making Disciples the Jesus Way. On Sunday, we discussed how Jesus modeled a life of prayer to his disciples. We are talking about how to minister to people in “chair two”, or those who have chosen to follow Jesus, but are still learning how to walk in step with Him. We are now looking at 6 fundamental principles that Jesus modeled to His disciples, and how we should also do that with the people we know. You can find the latest notes on the class here: https://www.hollyhillcoc.org/resources
Wednesday Evening Class (6:30pm):
Current Class: The Psalms. Last night we started our first Psalm, which was Psalm 1. Kurt explained how the book is an introduction to the Psalms, and we spent the class reading the psalm, and beginning to discuss it. Our discussion remained in verse 1. We will continue from there in two weeks after VBS.
