NEW YEAR, NEW CREATION

I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.” (John 15:5, ESV)

MINI DEVOTIONAL

A mini message to take with you this week to help you in your devotion to God.

NEW YEAR, NEW CREATION

BY: ELIJAH BELL

As we stand on the threshold of a new year, the church family is buzzing with anticipation about the future. New leadership, dedicated committees, and an atmosphere charged with excitement and renewal set the stage for what's to come in 2025 at Holly Hill. Yet, amidst all this human endeavor, it's crucial to recall where the true essence of "new" originates.

The Book of Genesis says something really interesting about this:

“In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters. And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light.” (Genesis 1:1–3, ESV)

Here, we see a world in disarray, transformed by the presence of God's Spirit and His spoken Word into something ordered and beautiful, culminating in God's assessment that it was "very good" (Genesis 1:31).

This pattern of divine intervention for creation and renewal isn't just seen at the dawn of the world. It's mirrored in the life of Jesus Christ, particularly at His baptism:

“And when Jesus was baptized, immediately he went up from the water, and behold, the heavens were opened to him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming to rest on him; and behold, a voice from heaven said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.”” (Matthew 3:16–17, ESV)

In this moment, the world, languishing in anticipation of redemption, witnesses the Spirit of God in action once more, with Jesus as the divine Word ushering in new light, and new beginnings.

The central message here is clear: Jesus is the catalyst for new creation. He transforms the chaotic, the empty, into something purposeful and beautiful. He is the embodiment of the Word that brings light and transformation to our world.

While we celebrate and look forward to new excitement, new initiatives, and new leaders within the church, let us not forget where true renewal springs from. If we seek a genuinely fresh start, it begins with Jesus, not with committees, not with church leaders, nor with preachers. He is the source of Light and Life, the one who can turn our new year into a new beginning in the truest sense.
