The Heart of the Matter

I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.” (John 15:5, ESV)

Mini Devotional

A mini message to take with you this week to help you in your devotion to God.

The Heart of the Matter
Devotional by: Todd Best

In a recent conversation discussing the state of this world, my brother-in-law stated that as he was teaching a Bible class, he remembered something a former minister shared with him when he was very young.  His words of wisdom were that you need to have God’s Word deep within your heart so that when the trials of life come around, you will have it in your heart to know what to do.

God taught this principle in the Old Testament: “Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one. You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise. You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.” Deuteronomy 6:4-9

We are taught to follow Jesus’ example. When He was tempted, He used scripture to rebuke the Devil three times.

• The first time, “But he answered, ‘It is written, “‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’” Matthew 4:4 quoting Deuteronomy 8:3 (ESV)

• The second time, “Jesus said to him, ‘Again it is written, you shall not put the Lord your God to the test.’” Matthew 4:7, quoting Deuteronomy 6:16 (ESV)

• The third time, “Then Jesus said to him, ‘Be gone, Satan! For it is written, “‘You shall worship the Lord your God and him only shall you serve.’” Matthew 4:10 quoting Deuteronomy 6:13 (ESV)

How can we have God’s Word deep within our heart? How can we use scripture to ward off the devil? We must diligently study the scripture. “Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.” 2 Timothy 2:15 (KJV)

To fully equip ourselves to know the Word of God, as instructed in the verses above, we should take advantage of every opportunity God provides for us through church worship, church activities and spending time with one another in spiritual fellowship.

We learn from one another when we study together. We are encouraged by our brethren when we pray together. We lift each other up when needed. These things take place when we participate in all activities scheduled by our leadership. “And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.” Hebrews 10:24-25

Missions

These are the challenges that the congregation is actively working on this month.

Our Missions For October

  • Equip — Invite a church member or family to do something with you outside of the worship assembly.

  • Teach — Share something with your accountability person (or another church member) that stood out to you from a recent Bible study.

  • Serve — Ask a deacon, ministry leader, elder, or minister how you can help, and serve in the way they direct you.

*Be on the lookout for weekly training videos on our Facebook and YouTube pages, published each Sunday, to help you complete the challenges.

*As you complete each challenge, drop one of the pom-pom balls into the corresponding jar at the Mission Control Center in the lobby so we can see how many people are completing each challenge. One completion per person, per challenge, per month.
