Turn The Other Cheek
“I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.” (John 15:5, ESV)
Turn the Other Cheek
Devotional by: Ray Bowman
“You have heard that it was said, ‘An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.’ But I say to you, Do not resist the one who is evil. But if anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also.” Matthew 5:38-40 (ESV)
In Matthew 5 through Matthew 7 we find the most famous sermon ever preached, most often referred to as the Sermon on the Mount. Jesus’ audience no doubt marveled at the amazing things this young rabbi was advocating, but one of the most head-turning statements occurs in Matthew 5:39 when He advocates what seems to be a passive response to a violent, insulting act.
Perhaps instead of wrongly interpreting this recommendation as a sign of submission, weakness or cowardice, it should be viewed as, I think, Jesus intended - as a demonstration of courage, humility, forbearance and resolve.
In his epistle to the Romans, Paul sheds yet a little more light on the subject.
“Repay no one evil for evil, but give thought to do what is honorable in the sight of all. If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all. Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God, for it is written, ‘Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.’” Romans 12:17-19 (ESV)
Whether the attack is physical or verbal, it appears that both Jesus and Paul agree that in-kind retribution is something a Christian should not even contemplate.
Peter was somewhat of a firebrand. Who can forget that, as the mob came for Jesus, it was he who stepped up and whacked off Malchus’s ear (which Jesus restored in an act that embodies the message Of Matthew 5). Obviously, the apostle had mellowed considerably when he wrote;
”Finally, all of you, have unity of mind, sympathy, brotherly love, a tender heart, and a humble mind. Do not repay evil for evil or reviling for reviling, but on the contrary, bless, for to this you were called, that you may obtain a blessing.” 1 Peter 3:8-9 (ESV)
No doubt you will be subjected to all manner of “slaps in the face” from a culture that either does not know God or chooses to ignore him. Reflect on the guidance Jesus also provides in the Sermon on the Plain;
“If you love those who love you, what benefit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them. And if you do good to those who do good to you, what benefit is that to you? For even sinners do the same. And if you lend to those from whom you expect to receive, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners, to get back the same amount. But love your enemies, and do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return, and your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High, for he is kind to the ungrateful and the evil. Be merciful, even as your Father is merciful.” Luke 6:32-36 (ESV)
Our Missions For July
Equip — Write down your story of how you came to follow Jesus using the sheets at the Mission Control Center, and ask another disciple to share their story with you as well.
Kids’ Challenge — Write down all the things you love about going to church and to Bible class. The teachers, the singing, the fun with friends, etc.
Teach — Share in some way your story which you wrote down as the Equip challenge with a fellow disciple, and for bonus points, with a non-Christian also.
Kids’ Challenge — Share with your friends the things you like most about church, Bible class, and the Holly Hill congregation, and invite them to come.
Serve — Do a kind deed for a non-believer, and make sure they know you’re doing it in the name of Jesus and the Holly Hill congregation.
Kids’ Challenge — Think of something you can do for someone who needs encouragement. Do that thing for them, and tell them it’s because of Jesus.
*Be on the lookout for weekly training videos on our Facebook and YouTube pages, published each Sunday, to help you complete the challenges.
*As you complete each challenge, drop one of the pom-pom balls into the corresponding jar at the Mission Control Center in the lobby so we can see how many people are completing each challenge. One completion per person, per challenge, per month.

Holly Hill’s Children’s Bible Class Ministry Needs Your Help With Materials
We are requesting your help with our new Spiritual Heritage Bible Class curriculum for K-6.
The teachers are tasked to create a God-made wall. This wall is a focal point in the classroom and will provide an opportunity to speak of the magnificence and wisdom of God. To ensure successful implementation of the program in our K-6 classes, the Bible class teachers need photos of any kind showing the greatness of God. These photos could be any type including nature, scenery, seasons, animals, people, etc. Use your imagination!
Also included in the curriculum are specific lessons directed at certain topics. We need photos of these items also.
God Planned Animal Houses
God Made Desert Animals That Can Survive On Little Water
God Made Camels, Snakes, Great Eyes, Protective Coverings, Beautiful Animals, Mosquitoes, Giraffes, Animal Hands (Claws, Wings, Paws), Big Cats
God Made Animal Hides, Perfect Animals (even though they look silly to us), Porpoises, Animal Ears, Micro-Organisms, Animal Cooperation
Great sources for these needed photos are magazines, outdated calendars, and old books. Size of the photo does not matter. Our first Sunday class with the new curriculum will be March 5th. We will be accepting and using these photos throughout the next 26 weeks. Please turn them in as you find them.
All we ask is that you cut out the photos and place them in the box located in the foyer labeled, Spiritual Heritage. Let's support these dedicated teachers and help ensure our Holly Hill kids know that our God is very great!
