Make Jesus’ Story YOUR Story
“I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.” (John 15:5, ESV)
MAKE JESUS’ STORY YOUR STORY
Devotional by: Elijah Bell
There are a lot of stories being told in the world, and we all love a good story. But there’s one story that should mean more to us than all the others.
Jesus said, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me” (Mark 8:34, ESV).
Jesus wants you to know that the way you become His disciple is to do the same things HE did, to make HIS story YOUR story!
Didn’t Jesus deny Himself? Yes, He did. Even though He asked not to have to face the death penalty for the sins of the world, He relinquished His will to the Father Didn’t Jesus take up a cross and carry the instrument that would be used to put Him to death? Yes. Didn’t Jesus die for the sins of the world, wasn’t He buried in a tomb, and didn’t He then rise to life again?
The answer to all these things is YES!
Let’s go back to what Jesus said: “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me” (Mark 8:34, ESV).
Jesus urges you to follow in His footsteps. He died for our sins, was buried in the tomb, and rose again. This is what scripture calls “the gospel” and it is that “by which we are being saved” (1 Corinthians 15:1-4). These are the things Jesus did. And if we want to follow in His footsteps, we will also die, not for the sins of the world, but to our own sins (repentance). We will be buried also (in baptism). And we will rise out of the water to live a renewed and transformed life of service in the Kingdom of Christ. Read Romans 6:1-4 to see how we participate in the story of Jesus.
So, are you making Jesus’ story YOUR story? Are you denying yourself and dying to sin? Have you been buried in baptism? Have you risen out to a life of service to the King? Are you following Jesus? Have you made His story YOUR story?
With so many stories out there, it’s easy to become enamored by things that aren’t truly important. Which story do you cherish, and which one are you living out?
Our Missions For August
Equip (18 completions) — Grow in relationships and accountability by sharing one of your weaknesses with a fellow disciple, and asking for prayers.
Teach (6 completions) — Be able to briefly communicate why you are a Christian, and what Jesus has done for you, and be able to provide supporting Bible passages.
Serve (11 completions) — Write out one of your prayers for a fellow disciple, and give it to them, and tell them you’re praying for them.
*Be on the lookout for weekly training videos on our Facebook and YouTube pages, published each Sunday, to help you complete the challenges.
*As you complete each challenge, drop one of the pom-pom balls into the corresponding jar at the Mission Control Center in the lobby so we can see how many people are completing each challenge. One completion per person, per challenge, per month.
