Communication Is Essential

I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.” (John 15:5, ESV)

Mini Devotional

A mini message to take with you this week to help you in your devotion to God.

Communication Is Essential
Devotional by: Tom Roach

At its core, communication is the sender transmitting a message to the recipient in an environment (Writing & Speaking Skills for Army Leaders). Sending that message today may be by a variety of means: in person, in writing, via email, via telephone, or via a video through the computer. The environment may be noisy or cluttered creating distraction or interference, or it may be absent of those things in part or in whole. Communication is critical to developing and maintaining relationships. Although communication is critical for leaders (leadership.ekerd.edu), it is no less important for us in all other relationships.

We can’t communicate too much. We need to share information frequently and through more than one of the means previously listed. Christ communicated in person. Paul communicated in person and wrote letters. Others recorded either what they saw personally or what was communicated to them. They had the Holy Spirit guiding their efforts to provide an accurate record sufficient for our understanding. John 21:25 states that Jesus did much more than was recorded and Romans 15:4 states that everything was written for our understanding and encouragement. The theme of Christ’s messages throughout His ministry are consistent. Yet even with repetition, the Apostles didn’t understand until after His resurrection. Why should we think one attempt communicating a message is enough for us?

The messages in the New Testament are generally simple and direct. We should communicate similarly. Clear and concise communication will typically be less often misunderstood. Unlike the New Testament writers who had the Holy Spirit to guide them, we should rely on prayer and another’s eyes to add clarity, especially to the more important messages. Colossians 4:6 reminds us to have answer with grace while 1 Peter 1:15 states that our manner of conversation should be holy. It may also be confrontational. Galatians 2:11-14 states Paul withstood Peter face to face because that was necessary. No one should like confrontation, but by the same token, we should not avoid it when it is necessary.

Christ used parables to teach his disciples. Those stories captivated their minds and challenged their thinking. Matthew 13:10-17 indicates that His parables also confused some people who did not want to understand who He was and what His purpose was. Every one of us has a story to tell. Our stories are probably easier for us to remember and can make the communication both more memorable and more relatable. Also, unlike Christ who knew the hearts of men as He spoke to them and answered their unspoken questions (Matthew 12:25 and Luke 6:8), we must listen to the question and then form an answer.

Finally, communication must be more than words; it should be a call to action. Matthew 28:18-20 is called the Great Commission for a reason: it calls the disciples to go everywhere teaching and baptizing those who believe. Acts 2:14-41 is Peter’s sermon on Pentecost and an example of his action in response to the Great Commission.

Let’s all work at being better communicators and eliminating the distractions which interfere with our sending and receiving messages.

How You Can Serve

There are a lot of ways you can get involved and do the work of God in our community!

Limited-Time Opportunities:

  • “Avenues For Women” Baby Bottle Collection (DUE THIS SUNDAY)

Each Mother's Day we pass out Baby Bottles to benefit Avenues for Women. It is a community organization dedicated to working with women to choose life and provides a variety of services. They even work with men and post-abortion women. It has a Christ based focus. We will start with 2 milk crates of baby bottles. They will be located at the main entrance. Let's each take one or two and have such a strong demand that we need even more bottles. The bottles are returned when they are filled. Just place in one of the crates. We try to have them in by Father's Day. Let's see if we can raise 2,000 for this great organization.

  • Operation Re-Stock The Food Pantry

The Food Pantry needs to be re-stocked. During the upcoming months we will be asking for specific food donations. There will be a box in the foyer for you to place your food donations. Thank you so much and let’s make Operation re-stock a success!! For the month of June, we need:

    • Peanut Butter

    • Jelly

    • Saltine Crackers

Long-Term Opportunities:

  • Tech Team Support

The Holly Hill Tech Team needs help. We would love to have a few more people trained and available to set up the livestreams and audio equipment. It’s a fairly simple task and you’ll be well trained before being thrown into the seat alone. If you’re interested, see Nick, David, or Brad.

  • Card Ministry

Every Sunday there are cards spread out on a table in the lobby that will be sent out to various church members and guests who need encouragement. You can help serve and encourage by making sure to sign these cards each week. If you know of someone the church should send a card, please give the name(s) and address to Joyce Best. We have “get-well” cards, “thinking of you” cards, “praying for you” cards, and sympathy cards. You can also text the information to (502) 593-5865.
