The Power Of Prayer

I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.” (John 15:5, ESV)

Mini Devotional

A mini message to take with you this week to help you in your devotion to God.

The Power Of Prayer
Devotional by: Ray Bowman

"Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working" James 5:14-16

I recently stumbled across a wonderful little book entitled "The Keeper of the Bees” by Gene Stratton - Porter. You might know the author by one of her more famous works, “A Girl of the Limberlost.”

My recently acquired fascination with beekeeping led me to the book, but I discovered something more relevant as I read. The book has subtle theological overtones that may easily be overlooked in a cursory examination, principally the necessity of prayer.

The protagonist, James Lewis “Jamie” MacFarlane, is a wounded World War I veteran frustrated by the inability of his doctors to heal a nasty shrapnel wound in his chest. He walks away from the hospital after overhearing his doctors discussing that he has but 6 months to live and planning to send him to a tuberculosis hospital, even though he does not have the disease. The weak and struggling Jamie finds his way to the home of an elderly beekeeper who is dying and asks the young man to care for his bees.

Now I know what you are thinking - “what does this have to do with religion?

The backstory is that Jamie grew up with a Scottish preacher for a father and a very devout, devoted mother who taught him the importance of prayer. After leaving his home for military service, the young man becomes embittered by a cruel world at war and steadily turns his back on his religious upbringing, stubbornly avoiding the one thing that would benefit him most - prayer.

How often in our lives have we found ourselves in a similar position, questioning the necessity and effectiveness of prayer? In his letter to the church at Philippi, Paul encourages his readers to find peace and spiritual healing in the power of prayer.

“do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:6-7

King David had been a man of war for much of his life, but he was also a man after God’s own heart and trusted that he would be given safety, guidance and the faith to deal with his hardships.

“The righteous cry out and the Lord hears them; he delivers them from all their troubles. The Lord is close to the brokenhearted, and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” Psalm 34:17-18

In the end, Jamie receives the spiritual and physical healing he so deeply desires, showing the doctors to be incorrect in their prediction of his eminent demise.

How’s your spiritual health today? Pray about it and ask those who care about you to do the same.

“Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.” Mark 11:24

God Bless

  • “Avenues For Women” Baby Bottle Collection

    Holly Hill Family,

Each Mother's Day we pass out Baby Bottles to benefit Avenues for Women. It is a community organization dedicated to working with women to choose life and provides a variety of services. They even work with men and post-abortion women. It has a Christ based focus. We will start with 2 milk crates of baby bottles. They will be located at the main entrance. Let's each take one or two and have such a strong demand that we need even more bottles. The bottles are returned when they are filled. Just place in one of the crates. We try to have them in by Father's Day. Let's see if we can raise 2,000 for this great organization. Remember as Paul, inspired by the Holy Spirit, writes in I Corinthians 6:19:

“Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.”

    Thanks for your support.
